Availability of 5G

To make 5G available in 2021, after 176 nations had already begun utilising 5G in the world, a process was launched by the government to do so.

NCC Executive Vice Chairman and CEO Prof. Umar Garba Danbatta, speaking at the ceremony, said that work on making 5G available in Nigeria could proceed.

Our 5G deployment journey began with a trial in select states, followed by review and stakeholder engagement, approval by the Federal Executive Council (FEC), the auction of 3.5GHz spectrum, and the official launch of the national policy on 5G network by the President. We have been meticulous throughout the entire process.

After the NCC received the official allocation of the spectrum, it will be assigned to the winners for further allocations." There is no legal impediment to assigning a specific spectrum reference after winnings are announced, so Danbatta remarked.

After MTN Nigeria and Mafab Communications Ltd won the 5G spectrum auction in December 2021, this is the next step in the process.

"Nigeria would have the widest 5G coverage in Africa" by 2022, according to Pantami at the time, - Premium Times stated. Although South Africa and Lesotho have had 5G networks since May 2020, and over 18 African countries have been experimenting with 5G as of February 2021, he nevertheless made this comment.

What We Think

As important as this is, it's impossible to anticipate how long it will take for a 5G network to become a reality in the country.
