Instagram Limits Users' Ability to Control How Much Time You Spend in App
It's been reported that Instagram has silently eliminated the option for users to set a daily use restriction of fewer than 30 minutes.
If you want to restrict how much time you spend on Instagram, the app now lets you set a daily time limit and get a notification when that time limit has been met. When it was first released, users could choose the amount of time they wanted to spend in the app, however, this option is no longer available.
There is a new radio button next to the maximum three-hour time limit in the "Set daily time limit" menu card after the most recent app update as if to urge users to pick that restriction. The menu card invites users to choose a new minimum of 30 minutes.
When you open the activity page, you'll get a popup that indicates the 10-minute limit is "no longer supported," but you may retain your current limit. Users will now be able to set time limitations of 30 minutes, 45 minutes, an hour, two hours, and three hours after the update.
There have been no public comments from either Instagram or its parent company Meta (formerly Facebook) on a recent update that seems to contradict the business's stated goal of empowering Instagram's users to make deliberate choices about how much time they spend on the platform.
A few months ago, Instagram added its "Take a Break" function, which allows users to get frequent reminders if they've been on the platform for a lengthy amount of time. Earlier this month, Meta announced dismal quarterly profitability, which resulted in the business slashing its forecast for the first quarter of 2022 by $30 billion.
When it comes to ad targeting, Meta attributes some of its poor results on Apple's new measures to make it more difficult for companies and apps to follow users across other apps and websites. Meta estimates that these new measures will cost the company $10 billion in lost revenue this year.
