Google Begins AR Headset Development Like Apple and Meta
In line with a report from The Verge, Google has begun internal development of an augmented reality headgear that would "mix computer images with a video stream of the actual world" to give a realistic AR experience, with a tentative launch date of 2024.

Google AR Headset Development

According to the story, the headgear, titled "Project Iris," is a "closely guarded secret" within Google, with roughly 300 personnel working on it. Display Iris will project computer-generated material into the actual environment via a network of sensors and cameras.

Performance is a technological problem for headsets of this physical factor that aspire to do complex 3D computations. According to the source, Project Iris will be powered by a special Google processor, but even that may not be adequate because Google may shift some of the performance to data centres to produce content.

On the software front, the headgear will be powered by Android. However, Google job advertisements may indicate that a new operating system particularly tailored for AR is in the works.

Google's previous forays into augmented and virtual reality include Google Glasses, Google Cardboard, and Daydream, but none of them was successful. The creation of Project Iris comes as rivalry among Meta, Apple, and now Google over who will dominate the future of the AR market heats up.

Apple has also been hard at work on its first AR headset. The headgear will be Apple's first big new product category since the Apple Watch, as well as the company's first substantial push into virtual reality and augmented reality spaces.

Apple's headgear, which has yet to be named, might be released to the public this year, but recent reports indicate that Apple is experiencing thermal issues with the headset, risking a delay until 2023. With this compilation, you can learn more about Apple's VR and AR plans.
