Twitter Ban- President Presents Twitter With Conditions To Be met Before Lifting Ban

The President of Nigeria Mr. Muhammadu Buhari has rolled out what is to be called “Terms and Condition” to twitter stating that the social network ban in the country will only be uplifted if twitter can meet up and agree to certain policy, such as the setting up of a local unit and payment of taxes.

Mr. Muhammadu Buhari listed these terms during a live broadcast to mark the country’s 61st Independence anniversary which took place on the October 1.

The Nigerian Federal Authority ban all Twitter related operations back in June as a result of the social media platform’s decision to delete a tweet tweeted by the president. According to twitter the president deleted tweet was flagged as breaching the Terms of service initiated by the company.

The decision to ban Twitter’s operation in the country caused a widespread condemnation from citizens of the country as well as abroad as online-based businesses claimed to have inquired massive losses; lawsuits; and national assembly hearings meant to probe the circumstances leading to the suspension.

However, a committee of members was composed to engage Twitter and possibly explore ways of resolve the issue that led to the suspension of its operation in Nigeria had successfully tackle a number of key issues, including “national security and cohesion; registration of physical presence and representation; fair taxation; dispute resolution; and local content.”

In his Excellency’s statement he said “I have directed that the suspension be lifted but only if the conditions are met to allow our citizens continue the use of the platform for business and positive engagements,”

Leading the committee which was established back in July, is the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, who disclosed in August that the suspension would be lifted in “a matter of days”.

“The ban on Twitter will soon be lifted as we are getting close to reaching full agreement,” the minister said. “We have agreed on some areas, hopefully in the next few days or weeks, we will conclude.”

The federal authority of Nigeria has insisted that the ban is a matter of national security and not related to the president’s tweet. But, the Buhari office administration has always been keen on regulating social media and internet-based broadcasting companies.

Hearing the terms and conditions led on Twitter by the Federal Government, the company is yet to relate a respond to this. Werther the social media giant will in turn agree to the demands of Nigerian federal authorities or not, particularly after deciding to establish its African headquarters in Ghana – a country it describes as a “champion for democracy, supporter of free speech, online freedom, and the Open Internet, of which Twitter is also an advocate”.
